What you need to understand is poetry is not like the rest of the world poetry is this liquid-solid-smoke that sinks between your toes and wraps around your fingers it inflates your lungs and sometimes it changes the beat of your heart just for fun it twines in and out of your ribcage like love does like pain does like the confusion in the folds of your brain does and sometimes it takes you far out into thoughtfulness and leaves you there like a lost child in the desert of the world but sometimes it picks you up and puts you down gently on top of the very thing you've been looking for so love when you say you don't un

I am not yet used to the flash-burn that rips across my skin when you touch me, or the wonderful hesitation that grips my limbs when you move closer. I don't think I've ever felt anything more entrancing than that scar beneath my fingers; it only adds to that perfect imperfection. Give me fire, give me flames that are to strong to be held in one soul give me sparks that lace through the space between our lips give me a blaze so strong that no amount of water will ever save us. We must take away it's oxygen. What better way than by sharing ours?

I've never called myself greedy, but love, I've been taken by the avarice. I want the feel of your scar between my fingers, your tongue between my lips. I want your hip bones in my hands, your clavicles in between my teeth. I want to take the air from your lungs and make it mine. I want the blood from your heart, where it's sweetest. I want the fire and the smoke that comes with it all, I want to burn until we're left as ashes to mingle together, even in death. We have never been closer.

There are times where I find that I'd like nothing better than to lay back and let the moss coat my ribcage, let my lungs snap loose from their strings and go to breathe the moon; send my feet to cross the desert and my fingers to trace along the spine of an octopus. This is not enough, this cotton-covered sweetness, this iron-studded pain. I know that they are lying before they do- I watched them paint the cardboard while they slept. I wonder if you see the colors on their eyelids like I do. Probably not, for I painted them there while you dreamed, and after all, you cannot glance in the mirror with your eyes closed.

My eyes are made of sand dunes, but I don't suppose that matters because my skin is made of manufactured silk and my skull is made of ivy glass so you can see inside. It's enough to keep the sand from blowing away. Usually. My lungs are sometimes made of small, frantic birds who have confined themselves in my ribcage. (There are moments where I want to scream, pry me open! Let them out!) And sometimes my heart is made of embers and ashes and I am certain that, given the fuel of all the lies you never told and all the truths you were saving for a better time, it could ignite like a torch in the distance. The fog presses fingers on our throats, clouding our eyes with the moisture of the tears we may have cried in joy or maybe misery. The nimbus it casts around the streetlights is not sodium-yellow rays in water droplets, it is late night giddy laughter and bedrooms that turn to sanctuaries at midnight, and the finger on the pulse of a wrist, on the pulse of something happier than the past two weeks of worry, worry, worry.
